EU’S CARBON BORDER ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM (CBAM) THOROUGHLY PRESENTED TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR

26/10/2023

As part of the activities of two USAID projects, Private Sector Regional Integration Support Activity (PSRISA) and Partnerships for Economic Growth, an informative event was held at the premises of the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia. The event, co-organized with the Center for Development Policies IDEAS DePo, focused on the topic EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Concept, Implementation, and Challenges.
During the event, companies were informed about the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), whose main goal is to ensure the collection of a fair price for carbon emitted during the production of certain carbon-intensive goods upon their import into the EU. Additionally, it aims to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU member countries.
Dr. Zlatko Veterovski, Assistant Director for the International Cooperation, Projects, and EU Integration Sector at the Customs Administration of North Macedonia, presented the key characteristics of the mechanism and its implications for the Macedonian economy and exports. To facilitate companies' timely preparation for its implementation on January 2026, the event provided detailed explanations and discussions on procedures, reports, carbon content certificates, support, monitoring, and practical examples of implementing the mechanism.
Furthermore, representatives from the private and public sectors had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the country's tax policy concerning the mechanism. Aleksandra Nakjeva Ruzhin, Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance in the Government of North Macedonia, provided insights into the tax policy related to the mechanism during the event.
