Dr. Dragana Chifliganec on Business Club: A Real Application of Laws and Greater Financial Discipline Are Essential for Economic Development

05/12/2024

In the second episode of the podcast Business Club, the President of the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia, Branko Azeski, speaks with Dr. Dragana Chifliganec, a representative of the younger generation of businesspeople and Vice President of the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia. In the conversation with Dr. Dragana Chifliganec, the first woman to lead a construction company and a synonym for Adora Engineering, facts are shared about the construction industry and the challenges facing the Macedonian economy.

"Macedonia needs a national strategy for 10–15 years, supported by all political parties, and implemented regardless of who is in power. It should include activities to reduce corruption and improve education, a key factor for any economy," emphasized Dr. Chifliganec.

Dr. Dragana Chifliganec earned her doctorate from the Faculty of Law at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, with a dissertation titled Management of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, which has been applied in her professional work. Since 2006, she has been the Executive Director of Adora Engineering, with the company's success built on the motto: "Discipline and hard work lead to success."

In her discussion with President Azeski, she highlighted the need for real financial discipline and accountability for mistakes, as a basis for reducing corruption. She underscored the importance of collaboration between the Chamber and the government to build stable platforms that strengthen the partnership and dialogue between the public and private sectors.

"Business is fast and dynamic, so when creating economic laws, regulations, and policies, the voice of business must be stronger. The business sector needs quick decisions and solutions, which is why establishing a legal system, respecting expertise, depoliticization, and enforcing laws is essential. There should be fewer instances where individuals place themselves above the law," stressed Dr. Chifliganec.

Regarding the three disparities in the Macedonian economy outlined by President Azeski—1) the relationship between capital and labor, 2) the ratio of dependents to the working-age population, and 3) continuity in law enforcement—Dr. Chifliganec stated that workers deserve higher salaries. However, she emphasized that the critical issue is productivity, which remains a significant challenge in the country.

Dr. Dragana Chifliganec has received numerous awards, including the international Lady of the Yearaward for innovation in housing and philanthropy (Belgrade, Serbia); the 40 under 40 award at the Business Elite’s Summit in Amsterdam; the Lady in Construction recognition at the International Construction and Real Estate Fair; and the Female Manager of the Year award organized by Marili and the Ministry of Economy of Macedonia.
